What Causes Warts?

Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Contrary to what you might think, HPV is not always contracted through sexual contact. Certain strains of HPV can be spread through casual touch or by sharing certain things like towels. Biting your nails can also cause warts to appear on your fingertips and spread through the rest of your hands. Once warts have appeared, they can reappear at different periods in your life.

What Are the Wart Removal Options?

There are several ways of treating warts. All treatments cause some irritation and inflammation, and none can be guaranteed to cure every wart.

  • Liquid Nitrogen: This extremely cold liquid is put on the wart until it is frozen. A blister may develop within a few hours.
  • Salicylic Acid Medications: These medications include treatments like Mediplast, which are available without a prescription.
  • Shave Removal: In some cases, this may be the best form of treatment to remove the wart. This requires a small local anesthesia injection, and then the wart can simply be shaved off with a blade.

Is Wart Removal Permanent?

Wart removal is never a straightforward process. While specific warts can be gotten rid of for good, others can spring up and take their place. This is because the primary cause of warts, HPV, remains in your system even after a wart is removed. Over time, the frequency of warts declines. In the meantime, we can schedule follow-up appointments to help you remove warts as soon as they appear.
