Dark Hair Dye and Chemical Relaxers Linked to Breast Cancer

A recent study from the University of Rutgers raised concerns about two common hair treatments: hair relaxers and hair dye. The study surveyed over 4,000 African American and White women about their use of chemical hair relaxers, straighteners, and dark hair dye. The results revealed a significant link between these treatments and an increased risk of breast cancer.

Key Findings from the Study

The study showed that African American women who used dark hair dyes were 51% more likely to develop breast cancer compared to those who didn’t use these products. Additionally, White women who used chemical relaxers had a 74% higher risk of breast cancer. Women who used both dark hair dye and chemical relaxers had double the risk compared to those who used neither.

Should You Stop Using Hair Treatments?

So, does this mean you should stop coloring or relaxing your hair? Dr. Lily recommends avoiding chemical relaxers and straighteners altogether. These products contain ingredients known to be carcinogenic, and inhaling them over time can increase the risk of serious health issues.

Avoid Harmful Ingredients in Hair Dye

When it comes to hair dye, Dr. Lily advises avoiding products that contain harmful chemicals such as ammonia, formaldehyde, paraphenylenediamine (PPD), and formaldehyde releasers. On product labels, look for ingredients like quaternium-15, diazolidinyl urea, and glyoxal, which are formaldehyde releasers.

The Importance of Avoiding Carcinogens

We can’t avoid every chemical in our lives, but we can make informed choices. Avoiding products with known carcinogens and evidence linking them to breast cancer is crucial for better health. In a world filled with chemicals, being mindful of what we put on our bodies can make a significant difference.

The findings from this study highlight the importance of being cautious about the hair treatments we use. While stopping all hair treatments may not be necessary, it’s advisable to avoid products with harmful ingredients. Choosing safer, non-toxic alternatives can help reduce the risk of breast cancer and other health concerns in the long run.
