How to Care for Makeup Brushes

A patient recently asked a very insightful question: Why do makeup brushes shed? Whether you are using high-end brushes or more affordable drugstore versions, shedding is a common issue. It’s something many people face when applying makeup, and it can be frustrating when small bristles show up on your face during your makeup application. Thankfully, there are two main factors to consider when it comes to preventing shedding and ensuring your brushes work at their best.

1. Bristle Color and Quality

The first important factor that affects the shedding of makeup brushes is the bristle color. Most brushes come with bristles in three common colors: black, white, and tan. While black is a popular choice, it’s important to know that the dye used to color the bristles black often weakens them. This weakening makes the bristles more prone to shedding, even if the brush is still technically “new.” This means that over time, you might notice more bristles falling out or sticking to your face while applying makeup, especially with black-dyed brushes. It can be particularly annoying when you’re in the middle of your routine and a tiny black bristle sticks to your cheek.

To prevent this, I highly recommend choosing brushes with either white, tan, or undyed bristles. These bristles are naturally stronger and less likely to shed. Undyed and natural-colored bristles tend to be more resilient and last longer without causing issues with shedding. They also offer a more precise and smooth application of makeup, which is always a plus. One of my favorite brushes, the Merit Brush No.1, is a perfect example. It’s known for its high-quality bristles that shed very little, making it a great tool for flawless bronzer application.

2. Proper Brush Care

Another key aspect of minimizing shedding is taking proper care of your brushes. Many people often neglect regular cleaning, but washing your brushes 1-2 times per week is essential to maintaining their longevity. Over time, product buildup from foundation, powders, or other makeup products can damage the bristles, causing them to shed more. It’s important to remove this buildup to keep the brushes in good condition.

To clean your brushes, start by running lukewarm water over the bristles. Avoid hot water as it can weaken the glue holding the bristles together. Once the bristles are wet, apply a dime-sized amount of a mild facial cleanser to your palm. Gently swirl the brush in a circular motion in the palm of your hand to create a lather. This will help to break down the product buildup and dirt. Rinse the brush under the water, repeating the process until no suds remain. Afterward, lay your brushes flat on a towel to dry overnight. This will help to maintain the shape and quality of the bristles.

It’s essential not to store or use your brushes until they are fully dry. Moisture can cause bacteria to grow in the bristles, which can lead to skin irritation or damage to the brush. Let them dry in a well-ventilated area, and avoid using the brush until the bristles are completely dry to the touch.

In Conclusion

While cosmetic brushes can be pricey, investing in quality brushes and taking proper care of them is essential. Regular cleaning, choosing brushes with high-quality bristles, and maintaining them properly will ensure they last longer and work more efficiently. By following these simple tips, you can reduce shedding, prolong the life of your brushes, and get better makeup results every time.
