How to Tackle Breakouts, Dehydration, and Sun Damage This Summer
By McLean & Potomac Dermatology | Skin Tips 2025

Summer is a season for sunshine and outdoor fun, but it can also wreak havoc on your skin. Increased heat, humidity, and sun exposure can lead to three of the most common skin concerns we see this time of year: breakouts, dehydration, and sun damage. Understanding the causes behind each condition and how to treat and prevent them can help you maintain a healthy, radiant complexion all season long.
Why Breakouts Spike in Summer
Warmer weather causes your skin to produce more oil. Combined with sweat and sunscreen, this can easily clog pores and trigger acne. Whether you’re dealing with blackheads, whiteheads, or inflammatory pimples, summer breakouts are often tied to buildup on the skin and poor cleansing habits.
To combat this, use a gentle, medical-grade cleanser twice a day and avoid heavy, comedogenic products. Look for ingredients like salicylic acid, niacinamide, or benzoyl peroxide to keep pores clear and inflammation at bay. Don’t forget to cleanse thoroughly after workouts, beach days, or wearing hats and helmets for long periods.
Dehydrated Summer Skin
Even though summer air feels humid, your skin can still suffer from dehydration. Sun exposure, chlorine, air conditioning, and sweat can all strip the skin of its natural moisture barrier, leaving it feeling tight, rough, or flaky.
Hydration is key. Incorporate a hyaluronic acid serum into your daily routine to replenish moisture. Follow with a lightweight moisturizer to seal it in. Drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcohol-heavy toners can also make a big difference. For an added boost, consider scheduling a professional facial to rehydrate the skin from within.
Sun Damage: What You Can’t See Matters
Sun damage isn’t always visible right away. But every time you go outside without protection, UV rays can penetrate the skin, causing DNA damage, hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and even skin cancer.
Daily SPF is non-negotiable. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every morning, and reapply every two hours when outdoors. For those prone to melasma or stubborn dark spots, pair your SPF with antioxidants like vitamin C to enhance protection and improve skin tone over time.
