Out with the old, in with the new! We all have those beauty products we cling onto—whether it’s that perfect shade of red lipstick or a drawer full of half-used mascara and eyeshadow. But as much as we love them, expired makeup can become a breeding ground for bacteria. The New Year is the perfect time to clean out those old beauty products and start fresh!
Here are some helpful guidelines for your End of Year Product Clean-Out:
Facial Moisturizers
Unopened facial moisturizers typically have a shelf life of two to three years. However, once opened, they’re good for only 6 to 12 months. If your moisturizer contains antioxidants or vitamins (A, C, or E), it can expire quicker because these ingredients are sensitive to light. On the other hand, moisturizers with acids (like glycolic or salicylic acid) may last longer.
Liquid Foundation
Unopened liquid foundation can last up to two years, but once opened, it typically lasts 12 months. Since most foundations are water-based, bacteria thrive in them. To extend the life of your foundation, store it in a cool, dry area.
Mascaras
To prevent bacterial growth, mascara should be replaced every three months. Every time you remove the applicator, it picks up bacteria, and sharing mascara increases the risk of eye infections. So, don’t share your mascara!
Eyeliner/Eye Shadow
Because of contact with the eye’s mucous membrane, eyeliners and eye shadows are more susceptible to bacteria transfer, which can cause infections. Powder eye shadows and eyeliners should be replaced every three months.
Lipstick
Lipsticks usually last around two years, but because they frequently come in contact with the mouth, it’s recommended to replace them if used during illness. Storing them in a cool, dry place helps extend their shelf life.
Nail Polish
Nail polish can last up to two years, but it can dry up and become clumpy. Although it’s not a bacterial concern, storing the cap tightly can help maintain its consistency.
Powders and Blush
Powders and blushes have a shelf life of about two years. However, cream blushes should be replaced after one year. To keep your powders and blushes lasting longer, be sure to clean your brushes regularly.
Makeup Tools
Makeup brushes should be cleaned once a month with a gentle shampoo or cleanser. Here’s a quick tip: Wash your brushes at night, lay them flat to dry, and they’ll be ready to use in the morning!
Can’t invest in expensive makeup brushes? Try paintbrushes! They’re much more affordable, made from similar materials, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. For acne-prone skin, try washing your brushes with Glytone face washes to keep them clean and clear.
