Dr. Kathryn Barbante has built a career defined not only by excellence in dermatology, but by service, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to caring for others under some of the most demanding circumstances imaginable. A board-certified dermatologist and Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, she brings to medicine a rare combination of intellectual precision, calm authority, and genuine compassion, qualities shaped as much by her years as a United States Navy physician as by her extensive clinical training.
Long before entering dermatology, Dr. Barbante’s path reflected both discipline and ambition. She earned her degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Virginia through the highly competitive Naval ROTC scholarship program, graduating with honors before being commissioned as a Naval officer. She later received her medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, where the foundations of military medicine and academic rigor became central to her approach as a physician.
Her early medical career took her far beyond the traditional clinic setting. After completing her Family Medicine internship at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, Dr. Barbante served as a Naval flight surgeon in both Iwakuni, Japan and Miramar, California, caring for elite F/A-18 Hornet and MV-22 Osprey squadrons. The experience demanded precision, resilience, and extraordinary composure, traits that continue to define the way she practices medicine today.
She later completed her Dermatology residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego, where she was selected as chief resident, an honor reserved for physicians recognized not only for their clinical excellence, but for their leadership and mentorship.
Over the years, Dr. Barbante has become equally respected as an educator and clinician. At Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, she served as a staff dermatologist, resident educator, and regional STEM coordinator, quickly earning a reputation for her ability to teach with clarity, patience, and generosity. She later returned to the Washington, DC area to join the dermatology department at Walter Reed, where she continues to care for patients while mentoring future dermatologists. Her contributions have earned some of the institution’s highest distinctions, including Teacher of the Year and Associate Master Clinician.
Yet for all of her accolades and accomplishments, patients often speak first about something far simpler: how comfortable she makes them feel. Dr. Barbante is known for approaching each patient with attentiveness, sincerity, and a deeply individualized perspective on care.
